My training is predominantly in clay but I also incorporate found objects, copper, leather, wood, paper …
As a mixed media artist, I work with the message visualized first, then I find suitable materials to express the desired emotions.
I have a great love for primitive methods of working with clay such as hand building using Pinch & Coil. Furthermore, the traditional techniques of surface decoration comfort me. I love burnishing raw oxides onto the vessels and using sgraffito to etch a design or a story.
Although I am not musically talented, I am fascinated with African drums. I have coil built two drums and skinned the drumhead with goat skin. When these drums are played with talented hands they sing the songs of women’s wisdom!
The clay didgeridoo was created as a gift to a wonderful young musician.
The use of mirrors in my work draws the viewer into the piece. We move from ‘viewer’ to ‘participant’ when our own reflection is captured by the art.
The figurative nature of my art is a highly personal account of my life and the lives of loved ones.
Fabric is a new media for me. I feel like an innocent child at play, as I discover the limitations of working in a blend of fabrics, either sewn or knitted together.
I want to work big! However, the scale of my work is often dictated by physical limitation of my studio or kiln.
